FAQ

It’s not always easy choosing your flooring. From taking room measurements to selecting materials, there’s a lot to consider. To help you make the right decisions, we’ve compiled a list of our most frequently asked questions about flooring. Still have a question you can’t see here? Drop us a line and we’ll get back to you shortly!

How do I measure a room?

Measuring a room can seem like a daunting task, but it’s essential you get accurate measurements to work out how much flooring you’re going to need. How challenging taking your floor measurements is depends entirely on the shape of your room.

Flooring is best ordered by metres squared. For block-shaped rooms, measurements are easy to take. Simply multiply the length of your room by the width to work out the area in metres squared that you need.

For more challenging room shapes, the best course of action is to break your room down into measurable areas. Work out the size of each block area using the above formula, then add these together to find the total area of flooring you need.

Which floor is best for which room?

It can be tempting to choose your flooring based on personal preference alone, but it’s also important to consider the function of your room. Different rooms come with their own set of uses that can make some flooring types unsuitable. Don’t make a rash choice when it comes to your flooring – see the table below for our recommended floor types.

What are the main differences between laminate, engineered and solid wood flooring?

At Kennington Flooring our wooden floors are made from the highest quality timber, guaranteeing their good condition for years. Laminate, solid wood, and engineered flooring are all types of wooden flooring, but each has their own identifiable characteristics.

Laminate Flooring

Our laminate flooring is made up of a number of layers, beginning with a HDF core and finished with the application of a decorative resin. To help the flooring last we overlay a resistant film, fused onto the top of the surface for years of protection.

Solid Wood Flooring

Unlike both engineered and laminate flooring, this is made from only a single piece of wood. The wood is shaped into planks and can be tailored and customised to your room. Everything from your choice of species, stain, and finishes all contribute to the style of your new room.

Engineered Flooring

Engineered flooring consists of layers of wood pressed together, with grains running in different directions. It has very similar qualities to solid wood flooring, but because the grains run in different directions it has increased stability.

Engineered flooring is a hardwearing and versatile floor. It is much more moisture-resistant compared to solid wood flooring. It is also suitable for underfloor heating, which solid wood isn’t.
